๐ Difference Between Bmw 318I And 320I
The 320i is an engine based on the architecture of the 318i motor in the previous generation 3-Series. With improvements to the induction and VANOS systems, this engine jumps to a round 150bhp. Capable of covering the sprint to 60mph in 8.8 seconds and able to hit 137mph, the 320i can also manage to eke 38.2 miles from a gallon of unleaded.
The entry-level petrol is the 154bhp 318i, followed by a 181bhp 320i, 254bhp 330i and the delightfully quick 369bhp 3.0-litre six-pot M340i. BMW 3 Series 2.0 320i Exclusive Edition Touring

I noticed BMW slightly increased 320i and 330i prices and introduced 318i in the start of the year. It appears that the 318i still has a 4-cylinder engine, pretty much the same 2-liter B48 as in the 320i, but it's further detuned to 156 bhp? The discount on its MSRP is quite nice and, possibly with a conservative tune it could reach at least
The BMW quoted figures for the 320i are 6.1l/100km combined for the manual and 5.9l/100km for the auto. Doesnt look like anyone is getting anywhere close to that!! I was toying with the idea of trading in my pre-lci e90 320d (A/T) for a f30 320i because "on paper" it seems like the petrol engine is even more economical than my diesel?
In Ireland the new BMW 3 Series is sold with petrol and diesel engines, and there is also a new BMW 330e plug-in hybrid. On the petrol side there is a 2.0-litre petrol badged 318i, 320i or 330i depending on horsepower; there are also 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre diesels (badged 318d, 320d, 330d).
A 320i has a 2.2L 6-cylinder engine whereas my 318i has a 4-cylinder 2.0L engine. Historically, a 318i would have been an 1800cc, etc. But with the last two or three generations, what BMW has sheepishly done is to increase the 318iโs engine capacity to 2000cc, and made the 320i a 2.0 Turbo engine.
I believe SE stands for "Special Equipment" on BMW. Basically individual options. The "M" on the steering wheel means it has an M Sport package, mostly prettier design trim - bodykit, M badges, steering wheel, shift knob, exhaust tips, etc. Possibly a harder suspension as well, not sure if all models get that. From the pictures the BMW is an E90.
BMW's response was to introduce a raft of new engines, the 170bhp 2.2-litre 320i and the 192bhp 325i followed by a summer 2001 revision to the styling, steering and suspension set ups of the saloon and touring models. The 318i got a 2.0-litre 143bhp engine whilst the 320d also benefited from a power boost due to new common rail technology.
